ST. LOUIS WGU Missouri has announced the appointment of Michael McMillan to the WGU Missouri Advisory Board. As a private, nonprofit institution established by the state of Missouri, WGU Missouri works in partnership with its parent institution, Western Governors University, and under the guidance of the state advisory board. The Advisory Board is comprised of individuals who reside in Missouri and provide counsel on the most effective ways the university can meet the core mission of economic development in the state.
McMillan is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, which is the #1 ranked affiliate in the country with almost 200 employees, 10 locations and 25 programs. McMillan works to oversee the management and strategic growth of the agency throughout the St. Louis region. He has been a member of the Urban League since the age of 16 and has been a Lifetime member for over 14 years. He previously served as a member of the Urban League’s Board of Directors and Executive Committee.
Prior to stepping into his current role at the Urban League of Metropolitan St. Louis, McMillan served as a License Collector for the City of St. Louis and was alderman of the 19th Ward in St. Louis City’s Midtown neighborhood for 10 years. McMillan has a passion for education, helping disadvantaged community members and promoting self-sufficiency and economic empowerment. He created The Salute to Women in Leadership Awards program to recognize women who have gone above and beyond to help those less fortunate than themselves and established educational programs that give students positive role models and mentors. His past work and dedication to education and helping others has won him numerous awards, including the 2013 Trumpet Award for Community Service, a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Montford Point Marines (counterparts of the Tuskegee Airmen), Chairman’s Award presented by the St. Louis Minority Supplier Development Council, and 150 others.
“We are thrilled to have Michael join our Advisory Board during this exciting time of growth and development for the university,” said Dr. Angie Besendorfer, WGU Missouri Chancellor. “Michael’s passion for education and leadership will be an incredible asset to promoting our mission across the state, and his nonprofit background, coupled with his experience working in local communities, will provide great insight as we work to better our university.”
McMillan holds a bachelor’s degree in African American Studies, and a minor in Political Science with an emphasis in Finance from Saint Louis University.
